The bathroom is now regarded as one of the major focal points in architectural and design schemes. Bathrooms are hot right now in the home improvement business, eclipsing demand for new and remodeled kitchens. This change from a merely utilitarian cleansing space to a luxury environment has been partly influenced by modern hotel and spa resort bathroom design.

The transformation has been dramatic. The cramped, dark bathrooms of decades past have become retreats in which to indulge the senses. There are mirrors which never fog, music piped into the shower stall, and you can access the Internet while dressing. You can watch television while in the bathtub on a screen which retracts when you are done. Media has also moved into the bathroom.

Some have a small refrigerator and a space for making coffee, or blending fruit smoothies for breakfast. Some modern bathroom designs even have areas set aside for aerobic exercise, stretching, mediation or yoga. Today's bathroom can be an oasis of efficient yet luxurious indulgence, a relaxing temporary retreat from a hectic world. Bubbles swirl in the tub, water pulses and steams forth from fixtures with the power to soothe aches of body and soul. Bathrooms are a perfect stress-buster.

Shower and baths are sculptured spaces, akin to indoor fountains of hygiene and health. Dimmed lighting and scented candles encourage a relaxed mood. The contemporary bathroom is a personalized private refuge, as beautiful as it is functional.
